Battle of the Livery Stable

July 1863

On this spot stood the Bardstown Livery Stable, built about 1850. On July 5th – 6th, 1863, twenty-five union cavalry troops held off hundreds of Morgan’s Confederate raiders for over twenty-four hours, using the large stable as a fort. Two local citizens were killed by stray bullets during the siege. When Gen. John Hunt Morgan arrived before daylight, July 6th, he arranged a truce and surrender by 10 A.M. to shorten the delay. Hurrying his cavalry force north-west to the Ohio River, he crossed for the “Great Raid” invasion of Indiana and Ohio. The Bardstown delay would prove critical in the military sweep north of the river when Morgan was captured…. Delayed by a few hours in crossing the Ohio for escape south back to Kentucky. He always cursed the “twenty-five damn Yankees”!! costing him twenty-four precious hours.
